What is the difference between coaching and therapy?
The main difference between coaching and therapy is that coaching is more future-focused while therapy is more present and past-focused.
Coaching is more about aiding a client in defining and achieving future goals. Both coaching and therapy can be about resolving current issues through increasing insight, learning and using new coping skills, and increasing healthy self care. Therapy can also involve healing from the past and increasing understanding how our past can influence maladaptive patterns of thinking and behavior.
Coaching is action-oriented and can be viewed as bridging the gap between knowledge and action. As such, coaching involves motivational enhancement, “between session home assignments”, and accountability. The therapist as coach synergistically utilizes these factors to assist clients in identifying and making forward progress in achieving self-determined goals.
Finally, coaching is “self-pay” (i.e. $150 for a 55 minute coaching session) as insurance companies do not recognize it as a “medically necessary” service. Coaching clients are required to maintain a credit card on file to which their services will billed at midnight on the the service is provided.
